Our new design challenge is a dream location and site for a New Plymouth residential architect. Located on absolute waterfront, the site overlooks the west coast of New Zealand.
The existing home is a single storey timber weatherboard cottage with a tiled roof, on a triangular block, with the longest boundary onto the waterfront and 13km coastal pathway which leads to town. The brief from the clients was to add a new kitchen, feature fireplace, new double garage, new entry and wrap around deck with outdoor area to sit with a vantage to look out to the ocean. The upper floor addition was to be a generous single attic space with raked ceilings, a room to be used to enjoy the ocean views in two directions. The new chimney provides an upper floor fireplace to keep away the winter chills.A secondary dwelling adjacent to the home, with its own facilities and views, will be used by family and friends. The construction has been staged with the secondary dwelling built first, alterations to the existing home to follow at the next stage.
It is also noted for being a coastal city with a mountain within 30 minutes drive, where residents and visitors to New Plymouth can snowboard, ski, water ski and surf all in the same day.
The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery shows contemporary exhibitions. Close by, Pukekura Park has botanical gardens and birdlife. Subalpine forests and waterfalls characterise Egmont National Park to the south.
